Mahalla Spinning Hour

Gharbia – Marwa Shaheen:

Activists circulated on social media the story of the famous Mahalla spinning clock stopping, following it continued to operate for 76 years without stopping.

The Mahalla Spinning Clock, located in the city of Al-Mahalla Al-Kabri, Gharbia Governorate, was established by Talaat Harb in 1947, through an English company. It is one of the most important historical monuments that distinguish the city from other cities in the province.

The idea of manufacturing the watch goes back to being a symbol for the company’s workers, when they enter the factories at 7:30 in the morning, and its bells ring so that all workers know the time of the hour.

The length of the Ghazl Al-Mahalla clock is 90 meters, from the surface of the earth to the lightning rod, and the length of the dial is 5 meters and 20 cm, and the length of the large scorpion is 2.75 meters, and the length of the small scorpion is 2.25 meters.

An official source at Ghazl El-Mahalla Company confirmed that the reason for the watch’s failure was due to the non-renewal of the contract with the worker responsible for its maintenance, as he had experience from previous generations on how maintenance works for the watch daily, and repairing any malfunctions that may occur with it, whether mechanical or electrical, so that the watch works without stopping. .

It is worth noting that Ghazl El-Mahalla Company used to allocate, at an earlier time, an official to maintain the watch in order to keep it from stopping, and so that it performs its work on a regular basis.
