The Danish shipping company Maersk will not sail on the Red Sea for 48 hours. The company halted transport via that route following Houthi rebels once more attacked one of its ships.
Due to the attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels on cargo ships, the container carrier also decided to avoid the Red Sea in the middle of this month. A few days ago, the company restarted transport via that route. Maersk dared to do this because regarding twenty countries had agreed to jointly protect ships in the region.
According to the shipping company, the Maersk Hangzhou was attacked on Saturday evening. The US Navy present in the area said it sank three of the four attacking boats. The fourth boat is said to have escaped. This was reported by Central Command, one of the combat commands of the US Department of Defense X.
According to Central Command, the rebel boats came within 20 meters of the ship, which was fired upon by small arms fire. A security team on board the Maersk Hangzhou returned fire.
The attack was averted with the help of helicopters that took off from two American frigates in the area. According to Maersk, the ship’s crew was unharmed and the vessel was able to continue its journey.
Because of the attacks, major shipping companies such as Maersk and Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd stopped using Red Sea routes earlier this month. Houthi rebels attack cargo ships in retaliation for Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip.
