Maduro says 2,000 people arrested in protests against election results – 2024-08-04 19:14:47

The president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduroannounced this Saturday that 2 thousand people have been detained in the Caribbean nation in protests against the result presidential officialof which the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed as winner of the leader.

“Have 2 thousand prisoners captured and from there they go to (the prisons) Tocorón and Tocuyito, maximum punishment, justice. This time There will be no forgivenessthis time there will be no forgiveness, this time there will be Stump“, said the president in front of supporters who marched this Saturday in Caracas.

Maduro said that what the detainees did was “very serious“so -he said- there will be complete justice“.

The president accused the detained protesters of allegedly burn down polling stationsas well as regional headquarters of the CNE.

“Everyone confesses, everyone, because there has been a strict legal processdirected by the General Prosecutor of the Republicwith full guarantees and all are convicted and confessed“, he added.

Thursday, Maduro ordered to lock up in these two prisons to those arrested who have left the protests in Venezuelaagainst the result electoralwhich ratified it as winnerwhat has been disputed by majority opposition and a good part of the international community.

“I’m preparing two prisonswhat I must have them ready in 15 daysthey were already preparing (Tocorón and Tocuyito), and all the guarimberos (violent protesters) are going for” these Penaltieshe said then, during a meeting with businessmen, in which reiterated that the detainees form part of a coup against him.

Meanwhile, relatives of those detained in the protests and several NGOs denounced that the State prevents to be assisted by the private defense and have contact with their families.

On Thursday, the legal coordinator of the NGO Foro Penal, Stefania Migliorinitold EFE that some of those captured are being presenting “in courts of terrorism” y without access to a defense with private lawyers.

The NGO Foro Penal estimates that 939 people have been arrested in connection with the protests since Monday until 3:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) on Saturday, including 90 teenagers, 11 civilians and one soldier.
