Caracas, Aug 13 (EFE).- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro received the credentials of the Monsignor Alberto Ortega Martín, Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See appointed to the Caribbean country, reported the state channel VTV.
Maduro received Ortega at the Miraflores presidential palace – headquarters of the Executive – in Caracas, accompanied by Foreign Minister Yván Gil and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Europe, Coromoto Godoy.
According to the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, Ortega – who has a doctorate in Canon Law – was born in Madrid in 1962, was ordained a priest on April 28, 1990, and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 1997.
He also served in the apostolic nunciatures in Nicaragua (1997-1999), South Africa (1999-2002) and Lebanon (2002-2004).
He also served as Apostolic Nuncio in Jordan, Iraq and Chile.
According to VTV, the Apostolic Nuncio has his headquarters in Caracas while Venezuela has an embassy in Rome, Italy, diplomatic relations that were established in 1869.
On August 4, Pope Francis expressed his concern about the situation in Venezuela and called on all parties to seek the truth and behave with moderation and avoid violence, after the country held presidential elections, the official result of which ratified Maduro as president. EFE
