Caracas, Jul 9 (EFE).- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday promised to restore the homes of a town in the northeastern state of Sucre, where at least three people died, 7,990 families were affected, some 8,000 homes were damaged and 360 destroyed, following a river overflowed due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl, according to an official report.
“Cumanacoa and the Montes municipality will be reborn (…) Now we are going to clean everything, to recover, to rebuild. House by house we must recover. This has to be a special model of recovery (…). We are going to get out of this well and quickly,” said Maduro during a visit to the state of Sucre.
He also said that “studies for structural work have already begun” and that the construction of the houses can be “advanced”, without specifying the time in which the reconstruction work will be completed.
Maduro also recalled that he had approved a “special financing fund” of “one million dollars” for merchants and entrepreneurs affected in Cumanacoa, which had already been announced by the executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez.
He also spoke regarding the launch of the ‘Hugo Chávez Frías Rebirth of Cumanacoa Project’, for the recovery of the affected community, although he did not provide further details on the matter.
On June 7, the president assured that with the Misión Vivienda plan – created by the late president Hugo Chávez in 2011 – five million social housing units were delivered in its 13 years of existence, which means an average of 1,053 houses built every day, taking into account that work was carried out without rest on holidays, weekends, and even during the pandemic.
It is not known whether there are any houses in the area affected by the hurricane that are the result of the Chavista plan or whether any of those affected have benefited from one of these houses.
The president also ordered authorities to carry out campaigns to replace documents such as identity cards, birth certificates and property papers lost by those affected by the flood, and urged pharmacies in the country to support those affected.
