Maduro orders the closure of the Venezuelan embassy in Ecuador

This Tuesday during the celebration of the virtual meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC)Nicolás Maduro announced the closure of the Venezuelan embassy and consulates in Ecuador.

The measure, explained the official leader, is due to the support to the Mexican government following the irruption of the Ecuadorian security forces to the embassy of the Aztec country for the Arrest of former Vice President Jorge Glas.

“I have ordered the closure of our Embassy in Ecuador and the closure of the consulate in Quito and Guayaquil and the return of diplomatic personnel to Venezuela immediately (…) until international law is restored”Maduro said.

Glas was arrested in the first week of April. The official was wanted by the Ecuadorian justice system for corruption crimesHowever, the way in which he was arrested sparked rejection from the international community.

“We believe that CELAC, as proposed by President López Obrador and Lula, is a process of reflection, action, uniting wills, apologizing to the international community and restoring the situation to its original legal status, former Vice President Jorge Glas should be reinstated to the Mexican embassy and granted political asylum and allowed to travel to recover his physical health from torture in Mexico.”he added.

According to Maduro, the President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa acted in bad faith and must be held responsible for what happened. “He has not shown his face. I can say that he has hidden himself.”

The event coincides with the closing of the electoral register ahead of the presidential elections on July 28, which might affect many Venezuelans in Ecuador who were seeking to update themselves on the process to participate in the elections.
