Maduro calls for 30 years in prison for those who sought to destabilize the electrical system

The candidate for re-election, Nicolás Maduro, has asked for the maximum sentence, 30 years in prison, for a group of people who, he said, have been arrested for their connection to an alleged opposition plan to sabotage the electrical system.

The president did not mention how many people there were, nor their names, nor how this alleged plan would be carried out.

“Right now they are engaged in this, in an electrical war once morest transformers, transmission throughout the country. We already have several prisoners and I ask the Attorney General’s Office to sentence them to 30 years for treason ( once morest the country) and terrorism,” said the head of state on Tuesday, July 9, in an event with his followers broadcast by the state channel VTV.

According to Maduro, a candidate for re-election in the presidential elections on July 28, the opposition intended to carry out an attack on the electrical system, but did not specify how they would do it, in order to then blame the government and deceive the population regarding the cause of the failures in the service.

In this regard, the Chavista leader, in power since 2013, said that the opposition represents – he said, but did not offer names – hatred, harm and deceit, and reiterated his accusation once morest this opposition sector of having requested sanctions once morest the economy, which took away 99% of the country’s income, and then saying “it was Maduro’s fault.”

At that time, the president claimed to have first-hand information (which he did not provide) regarding the secret conversations of the extreme right-wing groups —as he usually calls the PUD— to prepare an offensive once morest the electric service, so he ordered the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) to implement a 24-hour patrol and surveillance plan in all the system’s facilities.
