Pop icon Madonna has been hospitalized with a serious bacterial infection. The Celebration Tour, which fans around the world have been waiting for, is automatically postponed.

According to Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, the singer of ‘Like a Virgin’ was admitted to the intensive care unit on Saturday (24/6/2023) and has received good medical care. Madonna allegedly fainted at home, which led to being rushed to hospital.

Although currently Madonna’s health is said to be improving, she is still under medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. Oseary stressed that while Madonna may be leaving the ICU soon, she still needs medical supervision.

What Is a Bacterial Infection?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a bacterial infection is an illness caused by the growth of bacteria or toxins. The most common types of bacterial infections include infections in the lungs, urinary tract, or skin.

For example, salmonella in food can cause a bacterial infection and lead to food poisoning. Strep throat is another type of bacterial infection that usually causes only mild illness but can be deadly if it becomes invasive, meaning the bacteria spread to parts of the body where it normally wouldn’t travel.

Bacterial infections can be caused by harmful bacteria from humans, animals, or infected substances or other aspects of the environment, and can be caused by good bacteria getting into places where they shouldn’t be in the body.

People who are most susceptible to bacterial infections include those with diabetes, a weakened immune system, open wounds or those who have recently had surgery.

Suspected of having Sepsis

Oseary did not disclose in its announcement what type of bacterial infection Madonna had. However, Dr Natalie Azar, NBC News’ medical correspondent speculates that a condition called sepsis may have brought the music legend to ICU.

“Usually, admission to the ICU will occur if doctors are concerned that someone may become septic or may have sepsis, which are potentially life-threatening emergencies that can occur when your immune response overreacts to an infection,” says Azar.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the symptoms of sepsis depend on the type of infection. However, the initial symptoms that often appear include fever, sweating, hypothermia (body temperature is too low), the pulse is too fast, the respiratory rate is too fast, and changes in the number of blood leukocytes.

“Bacterial infections are usually the thing that makes people the sickest that they end up in the ICU,” explains Azar.
