Madison orders 46 electric articulated buses from New Flyer

Madison, the capital of the US state of Wisconsin, is purchasing 46 electric buses from the manufacturer New Flyer. The Xcelsior Charge NG articulated electric buses with a length of 60 feet (around 18 meters) and battery packs with a capacity of 410 kWh are being funded by the US government.

The vehicles will be used to operate Metro Transit’s new East-West Bus Rapid Transit system in Madison, which is expected to be operational in 2024, according to New Flyer parent company NFI Group.

“Metro Transit is excited to partner with New Flyer to make our ambitious BRT plans a reality,” said Justin Stuhrenberg, General Manager, Metro Transit. “New Flyer’s track record of innovation, quality products and on-time delivery gives us every confidence that they will be a trusted partner for the largest infrastructure project the City of Madison has ever undertaken.” Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach at NFI, adds, “These 60-foot Charge NG buses will immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enable cleaner and more sustainable mobility, while providing faster, high-capacity transportation to the City of Madison community.”

Just a few days ago, New Flyer received a major order from Canada: Winnipeg Transit, the public transit company in Winnipeg, has signed a framework agreement with New Flyer for the delivery of up to 166 zero-emission buses. Also had Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) signed a framework agreement for up to 157 buses, not all of which will be electric.
