Madagascar: the pesticide detected in Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream is banned on the island

The detection of a pesticide in Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream has led to a massive recall of products on sale in France. The incriminated vanilla would come from Madagascar.

A carcinogenic pesticide detected

The American group General Mills, owner of the famous brand of Häagen-Dazs ice creamgave the order to withdraw four batches of vanilla ice cream from shops in mainland France after the detection of a carcinogenic pesticide. The production of these vanilla treats is provided by a Häagen-Dazs factory in Pas-de-Calais and the presence of ethylene oxide in vanilla ice cream is discovered during a check.

Reaction of a Malagasy minister

The results of the analyzes revealed that the pesticide was present in the vanilla that would come from Madagascar. For his part, the Malagasy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Harifidy Ramilison, reacted to this revelation by indicating that it is impossible that it could be Madagascan vanilla given that the oxide of ethylene (ETO) is a pesticide banned for use in the Big Island, reports 2424.mg.
