Paris.-French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday rejected the resignation of his Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal. The president asked him to stay in office “for the moment” in order to “ensure the stability of the country,” according to sources from the Elysée Palace who spoke to national media.
Attal announced his resignation on Sunday following the results of the second round of the legislative elections were announced, which gave victory to the New Popular Front (NFP), but without the necessary majority to govern alone. For its part, the Ensemble coalition, which included the Macronist candidates, came in second place and overtook the far right of Bardella and Le Pen. Although the situation caused by the European elections, in which the National Rally doubled the percentage of votes of Macron’s party, has been reversed, the Prime Minister has decided to resign from his post. “Tonight, the political group that I have represented in this campaign did not obtain a majority, and tomorrow morning I will present my resignation to the President of the Republic,” he declared live from Matignon.
The prime minister arrived at the Elysée Palace at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, AFP reported, but Macron has not accepted Attal’s resignation. He will therefore continue to lead the government to manage current affairs while a new government is formed following the legislative elections.
The final results give 182 seats to the New Popular Front, compared to 168 for Ensemble and 143 for the National Rally. The left-wing coalition has won a majority in the elections, but is still far from the 289 seats needed to govern the country.
On election night, Jean-Luc Mélenchon rejected any pact and demanded that Macron call on a left-wing candidate to govern. However, the New Popular Front still lacks a firm candidate for the post of prime minister, a debate that might generate internal tensions in the coming days between left-wing parties with different ambitions. The clashes have been going on for some time: with the New Popular Front already formed, former president François Hollande, the candidate elected in his constituency, asked Mélenchon to “keep quiet” and “step aside” to serve the coalition.
Speaking at the NFP headquarters, the secretary general of the historic Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, called on Sunday for “democracy” within the party so that left-wing parties can “move forward together.” “There will be no external words that will be imposed on us,” he added in a veiled criticism of Mélenchon, whom the Socialists consider a factor of division.
Marine Tondelier, from the environmentalists, is asking that the future prime minister must meet certain conditions: be aligned with the NFP programme, be a figure who can “pacify and repair the country”, as well as obtain a consensus and have political experience. “Many people have these criteria within the New Popular Front”, the candidate has assured.Infobae.
