Macron inaugurates the Agricultural Hall under boos and tension 2024-03-16 17:32:56

The arrival of French President Emmanuel Macron at the Agricultural Show in Paris this Saturday was marked by boos and tension. Despite the strong security measures, the French president faced a crowd of protesters who greeted him with shouts of “Macron resign.”

The traditional cutting of the inaugural cordon took place more than five hours late, around 1:30 p.m. (12:30 GMT). Previously, incidents were reported when a group of people forced a fence to enter the Puerta de Versalles fairgrounds, which led to clashes with security forces.

In an attempt to calm the waters, Macron met for two hours with representatives of unions and rural associations. The atmosphere of the meeting was described as “tense” at times, although moments of constructive dialogue were also recorded.

“We are all going to achieve it together,” said Macron, who promised that the Government will not forget its commitments to the agricultural sector and will take measures to improve its situation. However, farmers criticized the vagueness of government initiatives and demanded concrete solutions to the urgent needs of the sector.

During his speech at the Agriculture Show, Macron acknowledged that the crisis facing the sector cannot be resolved in a week. However, he mentioned some measures that his government is preparing to respond to farmers’ demands.

Among the measures announced by Macron are:

• Guarantee water supply for the future

• Address the difficulties of generational change in the sector

• Implement a census of agricultural holdings in financial distress to improve State support at the treasury level.
