On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, in a speech he delivered before the Moroccan Parliament, French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed his country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, stressing France’s position in support of the Moroccan proposal for autonomy as a solution to the regional dispute.

Macron also pledged to expand the scope of French investments in the disputed region, which would contribute to enhancing local economic development and reflect Paris’ support for Rabat in this strategic file.

The French President’s visit came after a period of tension that lasted for three years between Paris and Rabat, as the relationship between the two countries was characterized by a wave of push and pull against the backdrop of issues related to foreign policy and national interests.

But this tension saw a relief after France announced last July its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, describing it as the “optimal framework” for resolving the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Macron’s visit was officially received by King Mohammed VI, where the two parties discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries, especially in the areas of investment, trade and security cooperation.

It is expected that this visit will contribute to strengthening ties between the two countries and open new horizons for partnership in the fields of energy, industry, education, and infrastructure.

Observers also believe that French public support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue reflects a strategic shift that would strengthen Rabat’s position on the international scene, especially in light of escalating tensions with Algeria and the latter’s support for the Polisario Front. This step would open the door for other countries to reconsider their positions towards the Moroccan Sahara issue.
