Four months following leaving the presidency of MEDEF, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux inherits a sensitive task. According to our information, the man who led French employers from 2018 to 2023 was entrusted, in October, by Emmanuel Macron with a mission on economic security. Its report, which is not intended to be made public and should be submitted to the Head of State within six months, will focus in particular on the technological predation carried out by certain foreign powers in France. If China is not specifically mentioned in the mission letter addressed to Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, it should constitute a case in point for someone who did his military service within the marine commandos.
China and the United States offensive on the economy
In recent years, Beijing’s offensive on the French industrial and economic fabric has been increasingly singled out. The Secretary General of Defense and National Security, Stéphane Bouillon, bluntly declared, in July 2022 in front of the deputies, that the “Chinese spy at will and have a field day with entryism, penetration and capture attempts.” However, China is far from being the only economic predator. The recent veto put by Bruno Le Maire on the sale of the nuclear valve specialists, Segault and Velan SAS, to the American Flowserve is there to remind us of this.
Commissioned on this strategic subject, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux has maintained excellent relations with Emmanuel Macron over the past five years. The one who brought some calm to MEDEF, notably praised the government’s economic action upon his departure. “Since 2017, the executive has clearly pursued a pro-business policy. There is no precedent for such a clear shift towards a supply-side, pro-business policy,” he praised in an interview in May to Challenges. Ccontacted, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux did not wish to respond to our requests.
