French President Emmanuel Macron called on Monday for the creation of a “European political organization” to annex Ukraine in particular, in parallel with the mechanism of accession to the European Union, which might take “decades”.

Macron told the European Parliament, in his first speech on Europe since his re-election as French president, that he was also “in favor” of the “review of the treaties” of the European Union, a proposal put forward by the European Parliament in order to gain institutional effectiveness in times of peace, as well as in times of crisis.

On Monday, 13 out of the 27 member states of the Union expressed their opposition to launching a mechanism to amend treaties.

Macron acknowledged the existence of “points of contention” among member states on the issue, and hoped that member states would discuss this issue at a summit in June.

And earlier, on Monday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the Commission will give its “opinion” next month on Ukraine’s candidacy to join the European Union.

In his intervention on the occasion of Europe Day, Macron indicated that Ukraine, which is under Russian attack, is already “a member of the heart of our union”, at a time when Moscow organized a huge military celebration on the occasion of the victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, but he explained that the mechanism of accession to the European Union presented by Kyiv, “it will take several years, and in fact decades,” in parallel, proposing the creation of a “new European organization.”

“This new European organization will allow democratic European nations that believe in our fundamental values to create a new space for political cooperation and security,” Macron said at the conclusion of the conference on the future of Europe.
