Macron calls for “targeted European sanctions” against Moscow

Emmanuel Macron on Monday condemned Vladimir Putin’s decision to recognize the independence of the pro-Russian separatist regions of eastern Ukraine. He called in a press release from the Elysée for “targeted European sanctions” against Moscow, according to a press release from the Elysée.

The French president called for “an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council”, denouncing “a unilateral violation of Russia’s international commitments and an attack on the sovereignty of Ukraine”, specified the presidency in a communicated.

In the evening, Emmanuel Macron spoke at the same time with US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to the Elysée. He had previously convened a defense and national security council, which met for about an hour at the Elysée.
