Macron asks French parties to form a broad majority coalition

– Nobody won, writes Emmanuel Macron to French voters in an article published in French regional newspapers on Wednesday. He gives the National Assembly responsibility for negotiating a broad coalition to get politics out of the deadlock following the new election did not give any party group a majority.

– I ask all political forces that recognize themselves in the institutions of the Republic, the rule of law, parliamentary democracy, the orientation towards Europe and the defense of the independence of France, to start a sincere and fair dialogue in order to build a solid, and by definition diverse, majority, writes the president.

The formulations appear as an attempt to exclude Marine Le Pen’s far-right party Nasjonal Samling (RN), but are also perceived as a jab at Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s radical left LFI, which is the largest party in the left-wing alliance New People’s Front (NFP), writes the AFP news agency .

– Refuses to admit defeat

The NFP was surprisingly the largest in the election, which Macron wrote to clarify the political landscape in France.

The centrist politicians allied with Macron are looking for allies on the right as a counterweight to the NFP. The government of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal continues until further notice. At the same time, his centrist group went back in the election and has started the search for his successor.

The left side believes that they, who with their 190 seats are the largest bloc in the National Assembly – although without a majority – have the right to propose a new prime minister.

– Reason, harmony and calm

However, many in Macron’s centrist alliance – which secured 160 seats – will resist supporting a government that includes people from the far left. Some want a broad alliance that ranges from the centre-left to the right, while others only want to go together with the conservatives.

– Let’s put our trust in the ability of our political leaders to show reason, harmony and calm, for the benefit of the country and you, Macron writes to voters.

– In light of these principles, I will decide on the appointment of a prime minister.
