Mackmyra in bankruptcy – Breakit

The board of the Swedish spirits company Mackmyra Svensk Whiskey has decided to file for bankruptcy. It appears in a press release on Monday morning.

The bankruptcy application will be submitted to Gävle district court. The reason is that the company has not secured liquid funds to run the business, mainly in the short term.

The past year has been marked by austerity packages with staff reductions. The owners pushed for money in the form of a loan, and during the spring and summer there were talks with industry players about co-ownership.

Mackmyra has existed for 25 years and was founded by, among others, the former CEO Magnus Dandanell. The brand can be seen as pioneers in the new wave of artisanal spirits.

“It is with great sadness that we have to state that, unfortunately, it is not possible to continue the company’s operations. The company’s management and board have struggled hard to come to terms with the company’s profitability and liquidity. Despite a fantastic work by both staff and management, it is still possible not to continue,” says board chairman Pafter Skiing in a comment.

“I really hope that the bankruptcy trustee now gets the chance to do something constructive with the values that exist in the company and secure the Mackmyra brand and its 25-year history,” he continues.

“This is a sad decision, especially for our staff, our incredibly loyal customers and ambassadors. The feeling is of course reinforced by the fact that this is happening in the middle of the company’s 25th anniversary and at a time when we were really on the way to turning the company’s development towards profitability and a bright future”, comments the acting CEO Patrick Björsjö.

Mackmyra has been listed on the First North marketplace since late 2011 and has nearly 10,000 owners. The largest owner is Lennart Hero with 56 percent of the shares, according to the ownership data service Holdings.
