Report of Brazilian Association of Machinery and Equipment Industry (Abimaq) points out that, in the month of April 2023, there was a reduction in imports of machinery and equipment compared to the previous month of 16.9%, however, compared to the interannual period, there was a growth of 12.1%, totaling US$ 2, 0 billion. In another survey carried out by (Abimaq) information was presented on the overall volume of machinery and equipment used internally in the country, covering both locally manufactured and imported products, revealing an increase of 6.5% in March, seasonally adjusted, compared to February.

Despite this increase, the consumption of machines registered a decrease of 1.4% in relation to the same period of 2022. In the accumulated result for the quarter, there was a decrease of 8.0%. During the month in question, the increase was driven by imports of 6.5%, whose results in terms of value were impacted by the 4.9% devaluation of the real against the dollar.

In the civil construction sector, which is directly related to the machinery and equipment segment, positive perspectives were presented for 2023. Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC), the sector received projections for growth of 2.5% this year. This estimate took into account the continued development of the market over the last two years and analysis of the ongoing business cycle in the real estate market, which shows solid housing demand, as indicated in the release.

Still on projections for 2023, the 17th Sobratema Study of the Brazilian Construction Machinery Marketconducted by the Brazilian Association of Technology for Construction and Mining (Sobratema), stated that sales in 2023 will increase by approximately 4%, both in the yellow line machinery segment and in the entire construction equipment sector.

José Antônio Valente, director of the construction machinery rental Trans Obra, says that the reduction, which occurred in April, in imports of machinery and equipment in relation to the previous month cannot cause pessimism in the sector, especially when the subject is the leasing of large machinery and equipment as well as smaller equipment such as in service of hammer rental, water pumps, soil compactors and other smaller equipment and machines for lease. José Antônio went on to say that even though there was a drop in April 2023 compared to the interannual period, this report demonstrates that the current values are already better than those of January and February. “Despite the drop in the number of imports of machinery and equipment, every industry needs to work hard to reduce losses in the year”.
