OLED Dream: MacBook Pro Rumored to Ditch Notch for Stunning New Design in 2026
Say Goodbye to the Notch, Hello to OLED
Apple’s MacBook Pro line might be getting a serious makeover in 2026. A component roadmap from research firm Omdia suggests that Apple’s powerful 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will ditch the controversial notch design in favor of a hole-punch camera system. This shift marks a significant departure from the device’s signature look since its introduction in 2021.
While the 2026 models won’t arrive for some time, rumors have been swirling about a major design refresh for Apple’s professional laptops. This refresh is expected to coincide with the introduction of OLED displays on the MacBook Pros, marking a significant upgrade in display technology. OLED displays are known for their superior vibrancy, deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency compared to the current mini-LED displays found in the latest M4 models.
An Evolution, Not a Revolution
While the notch’s departure is making headlines, whether Apple will implement its innovative “Dynamic Island,” currently a feature found on iPhones, remains to be seen. This feature shrinks down the notch into a pill-shaped cutout that effectively expands to display notifications and activities. Even without Dynamic Island, the hole-punch design could provide advantages such as extra space for the MacBook Pro menu bar and a sleeker, uninterrupted aesthetic.
MacBook Air fans may have to wait a little longer. Omdia predicts that the redesigned MacBook Air models, armed with the hole-punch cameras, won’t arrive until at least 2028.
Beyond Looks: Performance Would Get a Boost Too
The rumored redesign isn’t just about aesthetics. Reports indicate that the 2026 MacBook Pro models will likely boast a high-performance M6 chip based on a cutting-edge 2nm process, promising a leap forward in processing power and energy efficiency.
Nevertheless, those eyeing the 2025 M5 MacBook Pro shouldn’t feel too disappointed. While it’s expected to retain a design similar to current models, it will Posses the latest M5 chip, offering a solid performance bump over its predecessors. Experts predict the M5 upgrade will be incremental, however, urging potential buyers to wait for the 2026 model for a more significant leap in performance and design.
The release date isn’t the only unknown factor. The pricing for Apple’s new awesomely detailed MacBook Pros is also unknown.
OLED: Worth the Wait?
The rumor mill suggests that many experts believe Apple’s OLED-equipped MacBook Pro is sure to impress, however, it could be a while before we see it hit store shelves. Some analysts believe that Apple, known for its strategic approach to adopting new technology, simply wants to ensure OLED technology is standard within the industry before integrating it into their laptops.
