With the public release of the macOS Sonoma 14.6Apple has made some good news available for those who enjoy using their MacBook in sleep mode. clamshell (with the lid closed) — especially for owners of 14-inch MacBook Pro as chip M3.

It’s just that now the computer can support two external monitors with 5K resolution at 60Hz when in mode clamshell. Prior to the release of macOS 14.6, it was only possible to connect to an external display with a resolution of up to 6K at 60Hz, with the MacBook lid open.

The news was announced by Apple itself on the page with the What’s new in the newly released version — not yet updated to Portuguese. Apple has also updated the support page about using the mode clamshell on MacBooks with the M3 chip to include the newest supported model.

This update adds support for using up to two external displays when the laptop lid is closed on the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 chip, and also provides important bug fixes and security updates.

The new feature had already been promised by Apple for the computers, which until today were the only MacBooks of the current generation not to have the functionality — which was previously present even in the most recent MacBooks Air.
