The newly announced MacBook Air com chip M3presents moderate gaming performance, especially in AAA titles, according to a video analysis made by YouTuber Dave2D.
Despite the advances brought by the chipset, made using a 3 nanometer process and which brings improvements (such as ray tracing hardware), gaming performance on the new MacBook Air requires realistic expectations — as Dave pointed out.
The device reviewed was a 15-inch MacBook Air with 8GB of unified memory, which in theory allows game developers to use the full 8GB as VRAM, in conjunction with 8- or 10-core GPU options.
However, according to the analysis, gaming performance does not just depend on high memory bandwidth; Additionally, the lack of a fan on the MacBook Air can limit performance due to the lack of continuous cooling.
In the tests carried out, some adjustments were needed to achieve good performance in AAA games. For an acceptable experience, for example, it was necessary to reduce the graphic quality and resolution of the titles to 1080p.
When playing Baldur’s Gate 3 with reduced graphics quality on the MacBook Air, the game ran at 37 frames per second. An older game, like Shadow of the Tomb Raiderperformed better, running at an average of 87fps.
In the video, you can see that, although the new MacBook Air handles less demanding games well, more graphically intense titles may require adjustments to game resolution and visual fidelity to maintain usable frame rates.
SSD speed in entry model
Surprisingly, the base model of the new MacBook Air — that is, 256GB — has a faster SSD than the model equipped with the M2 chip. As we know, the device has faced controversies on the matter.
The new MacBook Air, which costs from R$12,5 mil (13″ model) and R$15.000 (15″ model), it is versatile but has limitations for games. Therefore, for a better gaming experience, the most powerful MacBooks Pro with the M3 Pro or M3 Max chips are recommended.
