Mac Walters Discusses Departure from BioWare and Impact of Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Mac Walters has worked on some of the most popular BioWare games of all time, including Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and more. He was the lead writer when Mass Effect 2 came out and helped guide the series forward before deciding to leave the studio in January of this year.
Accepting FromMaxDuring the interview, Walters opened up about his decision to leave and what led to it. Apparently, the remasters of the first three Mass Effect games in Mass Effect Legendary Edition were the straw that broke the camel’s back.
According to Walters, even as a remaster, the game is “A huge project ”。 “All of a sudden, we have this unplanned project. What do we do with it?”

“I knew I wasn’t going to have a large internal team…I quickly realized that we were going to need to develop the work together and we couldn’t handle this with just our internal team,” he continued. “So (it’s) just a completely different mindset on how we want to run things.
“After Legend Edition, because it was so successful for me and the team was healthy in the sense that we really got along well and, of course, it was a critical and financial success, It felt like, this was the culmination of everything I’d done in Mass Effect, like everything. After this, I didn’t want to do any more Mass Effect. Why tempt fate?

It does look like Mass Effect Legendary Edition is leaving the original trilogy behind, and while we’ll be returning to a familiar character via appearance in the next Mass Effect game, Shepard’s early days are long gone.
