A group of modders managed to install the macOS Sequoia 15 no Steam DeckValve’s handheld gaming device. The work was recently published by a user on X (former Twitter).
Although the modification shows that the hardware is flexible, the lack of GPU 1 acceleration prevents it from running heavier graphics satisfactorily. This means that, for now, the device cannot run apps with very demanding graphics.

With the help of some people (like CorpNewt, among others), we were able to run macOS on the Steam Deck.
It took a while, but we found a solution to make systems newer than Catalina boot. So here is macOS Sequoia in recovery mode running on the Steam Deck…
Out of the box, the Steam Deck runs SteamOS (an operating system based on Linux), but it is also capable of running Windows without major difficulties. However, porting macOS to the device presented some challenges.
According to the modders involved, the installation was much more complex than that of Windows. It required integrated work between specialists to overcome technical limitations and make Apple’s system compatible with the gadget’s hardware.
When installed, macOS is recognized as if it were on an iMac Pro. Even so, however, the Steam Deck cannot use its full graphics power because it lacks GPU acceleration, making the experience limited.
This is not the first time that the OS has been ported to the Steam Deck, but for now, the project is just a “proof of concept”, that is, it is not practical for everyday use. More improvements would be needed for it to work well and be useful in everyday use.
The team of modders believes that, in the future, it will be possible to activate graphics acceleration on the Steam Deck when running macOS — since the system already supports AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture, which is the same used in the device’s graphics chip.
If they can get macOS to correctly recognize and use this graphics chip, the Steam Deck will be able to run Apple’s operating system at full performance, making it a functional “Hackintosh”.
