Volleybal CEV CupMaaseik made a good turn in the first leg of the play-off round in the CEV Cup. After a very exciting match at times, the team from Limburg won 3-1 once morest the Czech Ceske Budejovice. The second leg will be played on January 25.
The thump started well as it quickly accelerated to 12-6 and 16-10 following an equal start. Protopsaltis and Bartos seemed to take the set at 20-14, but Giraudo, 4 saves, kept the Czechs on track over 22-20. An acende Cox still put the home team 1-0. The visiting pressure in set one foreshadowed Czech whirlwinds in the second. Maaseik kept pace until 6-6, but then Van Schie (ex-Roeselare) and Stoilovic pushed the accelerator all the way down. From 10-16 it quickly went to 17-23, the Maaseik final offensive via Reggers and Bartos brought little success: 1-1.
With Reggers instead of Cox, the Limburg machine started once more. Bartos opened 7-4, but it was mainly Protopsaltis, scoring at 86%, who scored points. Maaseik fought his way back into the match over 20-14. Set four was once more close with the Czechs taking the lead in the early stages, Maaseik was only able to take over at 16-15. Still, it took until 23-18 before the home team might make the decisive gap: signed Reggers.
