Former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, who visited China, said on the 28th that both China and Taiwan have the same ancestors.
Former President Ma made this announcement while visiting Nanjing, China, and paying respect at the tomb of Sun Yat-sen, who is respected by both sides of the Strait.
Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary who led the Xinhai Revolution and the founder of the Nationalist Party of China, is called the father of the Republic of China, the official name of Taiwan.
Former President Ma also said that Taiwan and China “must pursue peace or there is no future.”
He also focused on non-“Chinese” nationalities, emphasizing that “this is the inevitable responsibility of the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.”
Former President Ma, who served as president from 2008 to 2016, is visiting China for the first time as a former or incumbent Taiwanese leader since the Chinese Nationalist Party, which was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party in the second Chinese Civil War in 1949, crossed over to Taiwan.
Former President Ma, who began a 12-day visit to China on the 27th with a delegation of academics and university students and their families, said he hoped the visit would help ease tensions between the two countries.
Former President Ma plans to visit Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, etc. until the 7th of next month and meet with college students from Fudan University in Shanghai and Hunan University in Changsha.
Meanwhile, the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation said it did not anticipate the possibility of former President Ma’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but said it would “follow the organizer’s decision.”
