There are no lawyers or, even less, “elevated” people in the M5s. Giuseppe Conte responds to Beppe Grillo in what can be defined as the latest chapter – for now – of a duel that continues in parallel with the M5s Constituent Assembly. While members and militants continue to pour their ideas onto the M5s platform, waiting for them to be elaborated and transformed into complete proposals to be voted on during the plenary session at the end of October, the long-distance confrontation becomes more intense, with threats of legal queues, splits and farewells. “You will find yourself having to choose. Conte is not renewing the M5s, but he is tearing it down”, Grillo’s words a few days ago. The reference is to Giuseppe Conte’s firm will to submit everything, even the name, the symbol of the movement and the rule of the third mandate, to the will of the base through a constituent process that starts from the bottom, from M5s militants and supporters, to conclude with the vote of the members on the proposals that emerged in the first phase. For Grillo and a part of the old Five Star guard, on the contrary, those three points are a red line beyond which the Movement would lose its original inspiration.
“No one can say ‘let’s discuss this and not that’, because a community of members is sovereign, it could even decide to declare the extinction of the M5S, there can’t be someone above, the community of members can decide everything”, explains Conte from the Fatto Quotidiano party who, then, warns. “I will never accept living in a community in which there is a subject elevated above the community itself”, adds the Five Star leader: “Because it is anti-democratic, but if this principle were to pass I could never be there”. In short, if in what Conte considers a confrontation between Grillo and the entire M5S community he were to be the first to win, he would draw the consequences: “I will never accept living in a community in which there is a subject elevated above the community itself because it is anti-democratic, but if this principle were to pass I could never be there”.
What must be avoided, for the former prime minister, is the specter of a split. A specter evoked especially among some members of the old M5s guard. “It is a prospect that we have never thought of, not even imagined, and that would surprise me a lot”, underlines Conte: “It would be the greatest contradiction of the 5 Star Movement. Now that the questions are no longer” as in the past to be voted only “online but are born from the bottom and then brought to the vote, should we lose the Guarantor? What logic is that? It would mean that the whole architecture was wrong”. Therefore, everything is at stake. First: the name and the symbol. “The symbol has already changed several times”, recalls Conte, lastly we put the word ‘peace’. As for the two-term rule, “I wasn’t there, they invented the double mandate”. However, Conte recalls that he never proposed changing the rule: “Let’s hear first if there is a need, if at the end of the process the symbol remains the same, that’s fine by me, let’s clarify it”. In short, “the community is sovereign”. To the point that “it could even decide to declare the extinction of the M5s, there can’t be someone above the community of members who can decide everything”.

The Five Star Movement: A Tale of Power Struggles and Ideological Divisions
The Five Star Movement (M5S), a prominent Italian political party, has been plagued by internal power struggles and ideological divisions in recent years. At the center of this drama are two key figures: Giuseppe Conte, the current leader of the party, and Beppe Grillo, the party’s founder. The ongoing feud between these two individuals has sparked a heated debate about the future of the M5S and its original inspiration.
The Constituent Assembly and the Battle for Control
The latest chapter in this saga began with the M5S Constituent Assembly, a process aimed at reforming the party from the bottom up. Conte, a former prime minister, has been pushing for a more democratic and inclusive approach, where members and militants can submit their ideas and proposals to be voted on by the party’s base [[1]]. However, this move has been met with resistance from Grillo and a faction of the old Five Star guard, who see it as an erosion of the party’s original principles.
The Red Line: Name, Symbol, and Two-Term Rule
At the heart of the controversy are three key issues: the name and symbol of the party, and the two-term rule. Grillo and his supporters see these as non-negotiable, arguing that any changes would amount to a betrayal of the party’s original inspiration. Conte, on the other hand, believes that the party’s base should have the final say in these matters, even if it means considering changes to the name, symbol, and two-term rule.
The Threat of a Split
As the debate rages on, the specter of a split within the party looms large. Conte has warned that he would not accept living in a community where one person or group is elevated above the rest, citing anti-democratic principles [[1]]. Grillo, meanwhile, has accused Conte of

The Battle for the Soul of the Five Star Movement: Conte vs Grillo
The Five Star Movement (M5S) is currently embroiled in a bitter internal struggle, with its leader Giuseppe Conte facing off against the movement’s founder, Beppe Grillo. The two are engaged in a war of words, with Conte accusing Grillo of trying to elevate himself above the rest of the movement, and Grillo accusing Conte of tearing apart the M5S.
At the heart of the dispute is the issue of democracy within the movement. Conte wants to submit everything, including the name, symbol, and rule of the third mandate, to the will of the base through a constituent process that starts from the bottom, from M5S militants and supporters, to conclude with the vote of the members on the proposals that emerged in the first phase [[1]]. Grillo, on the other hand, is opposed to this approach, seeing it as a threat to the movement’s original inspiration.
Grillo has accused Conte of trying to tear down the M5S, saying “You will find yourself having to choose. Conte is not renewing the M5S, but he is tearing it down” [[2]]. Conte has responded by saying that he will never accept living in a community where there is a subject elevated above the rest, calling it “anti-democratic” [[1]].
The dispute has sparked a lively debate among M5S supporters, with some siding with Conte and others with Grillo. A recent survey found that opinions are divided, with some calling for Grillo to be given a more prominent role in the movement, while others believe that Conte is the right person to lead the M5S forward [[3]].
As the dispute continues to simmer, it remains to be seen how it will ultimately affect the future of the M5S. One thing is certain, however: the movement’s internal struggle is far from over.
