In addition to the three circulating respiratory viruses, a new source of concern is emerging in Quebec hospitals.
Indeed dTwo children have died in Montreal from invasive group A strep infections in recent weeks. This was confirmed by public health, at a time when the metropolis is struggling with an increase in cases.
As of December 15, public health has identified four cases, in addition to the two infants who have died from the infection. Between 2017 and 2021, there has never been more than one case per year in Montreal.
Symptoms include ffever, severe malaise, pneumonia, skin infections with pain at infected sites.
Public health therefore calls on health professionals to remain attentive to symptoms compatible with streptococcus, especially in children.
