In his televised interview on ERT, with Christina Vidou and Costas Papachliminzos, PASOK President candidate Mr. Michalis Katrinis referred to yesterday’s meeting between Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Erdogan and the Greek Prime Minister’s references to the Cyprus issue:
“Mr. Mitsotakis, referring to Cyprus, spoke of the tragedy of 1974, as if it were some kind of natural disaster.
In order not to displease Mr. Erdoğan, he avoided capturing the truth. And the truth is that in 1974 there was an illegal military invasion and occupation of part of an independent country, similar to what Ukraine suffered from Russia.
This issue must always be raised by Greece, not only bilaterally but also at the international level.
Alas, if in the context of a logical calm climate, we are the ones who ‘wash away’ Turkey and Attila.
And of course it must be made clear that the Cyprus issue is not disconnected from Greek-Turkish relations.
It cannot be shelved to proceed with the negotiation of an agreement on other issues, which no one knows what is involved and which raises real concern.”
Mr. Katrinis also expressed his disagreement with the support provided by the Greek government to the candidacy of the Turkish diplomat Mr. Sinirioglou for the position of Foreign Minister. of the OSCE.
He reminded that Mr. Sinirioglu, as Turkey’s ambassador to the UN, is associated with practical movements and initiatives to challenge the ‘Treaty of Lausanne’ and Greek sovereignty over the islands.
