The chosen scenario is finally known after months of impatience. The Métropole de Lyon officially announced the redevelopment project Tilsitt and Joffre quays (2nd arrondissement) along the Saône on the Presqu’île.

The death of Iris and Warren as an electroshock

The area is considered dangerous for cyclists and was marked by the death of two teenagers Iris and Warren, aged 15 and 17, killed while riding a scooter by an ambulance. “On this particularly accident-prone axis of the Presqu’île (around twenty accidents since 2017, including two fatalities), securing the axis for different modes of travel appeared to be a priority for the Lyon Metropolis,” assures the community. .

After a public consultation, Fabien Bagnon, vice-president in charge of active mobility and the metropolitan executive have finally decided. And it is an alternative solution to the three scenarios debated during the consultation which was selected by elected officials.

A cycle lane separated from the bus lane

After the serious accidents, the Metropolis provided a temporary solution with concrete separators along the bus lane. But the development was considered dangerous by many cyclists who continued to have to use the lane reserved for public transport. There was urgency.

The solution adopted is therefore to keep two sidewalks on each side of the road which will frame a unidirectional cycle path in the North-South direction, separated from the bus lane and the traffic lane for cars. “Parking spaces along the sidewalk at the foot of the building are maintained at the request of residents,” says the Metropolis.

Parking alongside buildings preserved

The mayor (Les Républicains) of the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon Pierre Oliver called for the conservation of parking.

This development over the 800 meters of the axis should make it possible to reduce the speed of cars with the installation of five retarder platforms while securing the different modes of travel that coexist on the axis and preserving parking for residents. Three subjects which were repeatedly raised by the participants in the consultation.

If in the North-South direction, the cycle path will pass through the quay, it is in the other direction (South-North), that the choice was made to transit the bicycles via rue Vaubecourparallel to the quay and limited to 30km/h.

Work from the end of summer 2025

You will still have to be patient for the final development. “The work should begin in the summer of 2025 for delivery hoped for by the end of 2025,” explains the Metropolis.

The Rhône prefecture and the Architect of Buildings of France must also give their opinion on the solution chosen. The first is consulted because the quays are considered a Main Traffic Road (RGC) and the second because of the classified nature of the sector.
