Lydia Ko (New Zealand), who won 19 victories on the LPGA Tour, ranked third in the women’s golf world rankings, had the absurd experience of misunderstanding the golf rules and receiving a seven-stroke penalty.
Lydia Ko recorded a 7-over-par 78 in the final round of the LPGA Tour Dana Open (total prize money of $1.75 million) held at Highland Meadows Golf Club (par 71) in Sylvania, Ohio, USA on the 17th (Korean time).
Lydia Ko shot an even par 71 that day, but had to submit such a high number of strokes as a whopping 7 penalty strokes were imposed.
Lydia Ko received a seven-stroke penalty because she misunderstood the ‘preferred lie’ rule and entered the game.
As the course was abandoned due to heavy rain, the race committee applied the ‘preferred lie’ in the final round as well.
‘Preferred Lie’ refers to picking up the ball from the fairway, wiping it down, and allowing it to be hit next to a certain distance.
Temporarily applied when course conditions are not good.
However, on this day, the match committee announced that the ‘preferred lie’ would be applied only to holes 1 (par 4) and 10 (par 4).
Lydia Ko misunderstood that the ‘preferred lie’ was applied in all holes, and picked up the ball in holes 3 (par 4), 7 (par 5), and 9 (par 4), cleaned it, and put it down and hit it.
Lydia Ko, who also picked up the ball in the 11th hole (par 4), called the match committee.
The competitor rushed over and imposed a penalty of two strokes on each following hearing that Lydia Ko had played without permission in the 3rd, 7th, and 9th holes and put the ball in a place other than where it was originally.
Hole 3 par, hole 7 par, and hole 9 bogey were changed to double bogey, double bogey, and triple bogey, respectively.
In the 11th hole, the ball was placed in its original position according to the instructions of the competition committee member, so he received only one penalty stroke for lifting the ball without permission.
Lydia Ko, who suddenly added 7 strokes, fell to 65th place as her total score in the 4th round was 1 over par 285.
It seems that Lydia Ko misunderstood that the ‘preferred lie’ was applied in all holes because of the situation in the third round the previous day.
In the third round, it rained heavily even in the middle of the game, so the ‘preferred lie’ was applied to all holes.
