Lyari’s film maker won an international award by making a silent film

Karachi Areas of Lyari Adeel Wali Raees’ film ‘Two One Za Two’ was awarded at the ‘SWIFF Student World Impact Film Festival’ in America.

120 filmmakers from all over the world participated in this film festival in which filmmakers from Karachi also participated.

It is a matter of honor for Adeel Wali Raees because he Filmmaking Did not receive training from any institution. Adeel Wali Raees, who made the first documentary film from a mobile phone, has made numerous short films so far, many of which have won awards at the international level.

While giving an interview to Independent Urdu, Lyari filmmaker Adeel Wali told many things about his passion for film making, most of which were surprising.

He said that ‘Two One Za Two’ was made with a rented camera and the film was shot in four hours.

He said: ‘The film Two One Za Two was made in 2014 with no preparation, just the concept came to mind and shot the film with a street kid as the co-character. This film was shot in the narrow streets of Lyari when the conditions were such that it was difficult to leave the house.

Adeel Wali Raees chose one of the most difficult mediums ‘silent films’ for his film. About which Adeel said, ‘I chose a silent film. The aim of making silent films is to convey its message to people of every language.’

He said that all the films that have been made in a short period of time are silent. This medium of the film is relatively difficult, because the script of a silent film has to be made in such a way that each character conveys his own actions to the audience. Be able to convey the message effectively.

“In comedy films, it is relatively easy for the character to make the audience laugh with his actions, but it is a bit difficult to convey your message to the audience without saying a word on social issues.”

Adeel Wali told Independent Urdu about his filmmaking experience that he started learning film editing from the age of 12 with his father Wali Raees. Gradually, my interest started growing but the hurdle came when I did not have money to pay the admission fee for a filmmaking institute or a media science course. It was a difficult time, but the passion for filmmaking was on the rise, so I learned the work by watching.’

According to him, the film ‘To One Za To’ is an interpretation of his life.

Adeel Rais said that he tries to reflect the society through his films, most of his films are on social issues, education and child labour.

He further said: ‘I am not doing this for any profit but to preserve our traditions, our language and to show the world the positive face of Lyari and especially the Baloch people.’

He said that he made his first silent documentary in 2012 with the help of a mobile phone. The 12-minute long film was titled ‘Ned Fire Wings Towards a New Light’. When it was built, language riots were at their peak in Karachi.

Adeel Wali Raees has won 12 national awards and one international award so far, his silent film ‘Poster’ won the ‘Best Audience Award’ at the International Film Festival of Short Films in Italy last year.

Adeel Wali says, ‘In Pakistan, I have not yet seen any filmmaker working on silent films and I myself decided to make silent films inspired by Hollywood.’

Regarding the resources required for films in Lyari, he says that there is no dearth of talent here but we have to watch our pockets for it.

“We can’t make films from our pockets all our lives. If the filmmakers of Lyari get good equipment and a budget to make films, then you see where the film industry of not only Lyari but the entire Pakistan will reach.”
