Preparing Fly Emirates To launch a limited collection of luggage and accessories made from recycled parts, sourced from the company’s Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft.
The collection includes travel bags, backpacks, handbags, card holders, toiletry bags, belts and shoes, all designed in-house and handcrafted by a team of tailors at Emirates’ engineering facility in Dubai.
The collection is scheduled to go on sale in 2024, and is entirely made to order, meaning customers will be able to order items to personal specifications or include engravings of their initials. All proceeds will be donated to children in need through the Emirates Airline Foundation.
The initiative is part of a major modernization project involving 120 aircraft, which have received completely new interiors. Old cabin components are usually recycled, but Emirates says it is recycling materials from first and business class for the kit.
Items collected so far include seat belts and headrests, leather from the A380 lounges and fur from the cockpit seat lining. The airline says more than 30,000 pounds of material has been recovered from 16 planes so far, with plans to source up to 595 pounds of leather and 1,382 pounds of seat fabric for each refurbished plane.
Luxury bags
A selection of items from the collection were on display at the Dubai Airshow in November, and are made of leather in the first and business class sofa seats, as well as the aluminum of the headrests.
“We have produced handbags and backpacks that have already received a lot of interest,” says Ahmed Safa, Emirates’ senior vice president of engineering. “The leather is washed at our partner facility, then deep cleaned by hand. The leather is then conditioned and thoroughly disinfected before being made into the box.” And bags. Brand new padding has been added along with the handle and clips. We have an in-house workshop and a specialized UAE engineering team where most of these activities take place,” CNN reported.
“The idea for the different designs comes from our in-house team, who researched current styles, popular luggage shapes and functional backpacks to create styles for each piece,” he adds.
The work is carried out by a group called Engineering Maintenance Assistants, an in-house team of 14 tailors who are usually tasked with maintaining cabin fittings. Emirates says four of them are currently working exclusively on the initiative.
