Luxembourgers are at the top of the richest people in the European Union (EU), with a purchasing power 2.5 times higher than the average of the 27, according to figures from the European statistical office Eurostat, published Thursday.

GDP per capita in the Grand Duchy is 161% higher than the European average, specifies Eurostat, stressing that this performance is due in particular to the salaries of many workers from bordering countries who are included in the Luxembourg result.

Ireland comes in 2nd position with a GDP per capita 134% higher than the EU average, thanks to the many multinationals that have set up there, attracted by favorable taxation.

Denmark (+36%) is in 3rd place, followed by the Netherlands (+30%), Austria (+25%) and Belgium (+21%).

On the other hand, the lowest results are found in Bulgaria (-59%) and Slovakia (-67%).
