Lustenau also lost their 8th home game – 2:3 against WAC

The Vorarlbergers lost to the WAC on Saturday 2:3 (0:1) and are still without a win after the 14th game. In the table, the bottom team is five points behind the penultimate WSG Tirol, who won against Altach 5-1. The Wolfsbergers moved into the top half in sixth place, at least until Sunday.

Augustine Boakye (13th) and Thierno Ballo (64th/penalty, 77th) scored the WAC to an away win in the absence of suspended head coach Manfred Schmid, who was sitting in the stands. After the 4-0 win in the Carinthian duel with Austria Klagenfurt, it was the second success en suite and that right before the international break. A late reaction, including goals from substitutes Namory Cisse (69th) and Yadaly Diaby (85th), didn’t bring anything worthwhile to the Lustenauer team. At least they managed to score again after six goalless competitive games. That didn’t change anything about the fourth competitive game defeat in a row.

The Carinthians set the tone from the start and were rewarded with the opening goal at the first nice combination. Ervin Omic served Nikolas Veratschnig with his heel, and after his pass, Boakye hit the corner with his left from just outside the penalty area. From this point onwards at the latest, the home team’s insecurity was really noticeable, and any stability in the defense was missing. However, the guests were unable to capitalize on it due to a lack of efficiency. Mohamed Bamba missed three chances (20th, 21st, 25th). In addition, a Piesinger shot was just blocked (26th).

The Lustenau supporters repeatedly made their displeasure known by whistling, and they had to wait until the 45th minute for their first chance to score. A shot from the Rhine went just over. After the restart, the WAC initially retained control of the game. Ballo moved into the penalty area, but was denied by Domenik Schierl (49′). Thanks to VAR, Wolfsberg went one better. Boris Moltenis blocked a Veratschnig shot in the penalty area with his hand, and according to the TV images, referee Safak Barmaksiz had no choice but to point to the spot. Schierl guessed the corner but couldn’t save Ballo’s shot.

With a quadruple substitution, Lustenau’s game really got going. After a nice turn, Cisse hit the top corner with one of his first touches of the ball. Hendrik Bonmann prevented the “Joker” from scoring a double with a nice save (73′). In this phase of all times, the WAC made it 3-1 thanks to an error of their own. First-time neo-centre defender Kennedy Boateng was unable to stop a pass and Ballo had no trouble finishing after Boakye’s assist.

The final decision was made by Bamba (81′) and Boakye (83′), who both hit the bar. The home team stayed in the game and scored thanks to substitute Diaby. He almost scored a brace (89′), and Moltenis (90′) also came close to making it 3-3. During stoppage time, a planned fireworks display was set off outside the stadium, but a short time later the hosts were unable to celebrate in their last appearance in this stadium for the time being. Until the new arena is completed, the home games will be played in Bregenz.
