Doha: The Lusail Stadium, which witnessed the historic victories of the FIFA World Cup, will be the venue for the opening and final matches of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 to be held in January.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officials made a new announcement yesterday, updating the venues and match schedules of the 18th AFC Asian Cup. Earlier, the inauguration was announced at the Albeit Stadium in Alkhor, which was the opening venue of the World Cup. From January 12 to February 10, 2024, the matches will be held at 9 venues including 7 World Cup stadiums.

The opening match will be between hosts Qatar and Lebanon on January 12 at 7:00 PM at the state-of-the-art Lusail Stadium with a seating capacity of 88,000. Final on February 10. Apart from Lusail, the World Cup stadiums Al Bait in Al Khor, Al Janoub in Al Wakrah, Altumama, Ahmed Bin Ali in Al Rayyan, Education City and Khalifa International will also be the venues for the matches.

In addition to the World Cup venues, the matches will be held in a total of 9 stadiums including Jassim Bin Hamad and Abdullah Bin Khalifa.

There are 24 teams in 6 groups. Kelmi’s official match ball called Vortex AC23, made with innovative design and technology, was recently launched.

Multiple matches can be seen

As in the World Cup, spectators can watch multiple matches per day during the group stages due to the shorter distance between the stadiums. You can also stay at the same place throughout the tournament.

Like the World Cup, the Asian Cup will be the most compact, player- and spectator-friendly tournament. Reigning AFC champions Qatar are set to host the best-ever AFC Asian Cup tournament following the FIFA World Cup.

This is not the first time that Qatar has hosted a continental competition. Qatar hosted the AFC Asian Cup in 1988 and 2011.

The fact that Qatar are also the defending champions will add to the competition. Qatar is in Group A alongside China, Tajikistan and Lebanon. India is placed in Group B along with Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria.

There is no doubt that football fans from India will flock to the galleries to cheer on their own team to watch the clash four and a half hours apart.

The Indian diaspora in Doha will also be active with fun to get Qatar and India excited.

English Summary: Lusail Stadium will host the opening and final matches of the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
