Lung cancer: rats could detect it in our urine

To do this, these researchers have trained rats to recognize patient urine with lung cancer, using samples sent by the patients themselves. They also want extend this technique to other types of cancer. Endowed with a sense of smell overpoweredrodents were able to detect, by smelling only urine, and what nine times out of ten patients with this cancer. At the origin of these tests, the Early Labs company, whose director Avichay Porat said:

Each year, approximately 50,000 Britons are diagnosed with lung cancer and 35,000 people diemaking it the leading cause of cancer death in the UK. Experts say that a early diagnosis is crucial for the success of the treatment. Some research points to the fact that certain cancers could trigger peculiar smellsdepending on some diseased cells that interact together and in particular with the immune system. And these odors can be found in fluids, stools and urine (source 1).
