Lung cancer progresses among non-smokers, warn pulmonologists

the name of lung cancer detected in non-smokers has increased in twenty years, alerted pulmonologists meeting in congress in Lille (Nord) from January 1 to 23, 2022. Doctors presented a study which shows that this cancer now affects 12.6% of non-smokers. They were 7.2% in 2000, reveals BFMTV .

This progression is not fully understood by medicine but explanations are put forward. “There are most likely several hypotheses including that of air pollution. But also everything that is pesticide, insecticide, aerosol: all of this can cause respiratory diseases, including cancers”, confided the pulmonologist Frédéric Le Guillou to our colleagues.

Asbestos causes lung cancer

Another hypothesis: occupational diseases due to dangerous substances, such as asbestos. This subject “causes lung cancer”, explains Didier Debieuvre, head of the pulmonology department at Mulhouse hospital, quoted by RTL . This Cancer “is long sneaky, asymptomatic, for which people have no complaints. When they arrive with symptoms, it’s often too late.”, regrets the specialist.

Lung cancer also shows an increase in women. They represent 34% of cases, once morest 16% in 2000. In question, the increase in the number of smokers: in fact, cigarettes remain the cause of 85% of cases of lung cancer.
