03 November 2023

This November, on the occasion of lung cancer awareness month, let’s talk regarding an original information initiative: “CAP Lungs”. In more than ten hospital centers, information days dedicated to the general public will be organized. Objective, to allow as many people as possible to understand, act and share around this disease. Explanations.

With 33,000 deaths each year in France, lung cancer remains the deadliest cancer. But in recent years, its management has undergone profound changes, thanks in particular to the arrival of immunotherapies and targeted therapies. For example, two-year survival has doubled in 20 years. These latest treatments have largely proven their worth on so-called advanced cancers. They might ultimately also prove to be of interest in the early stages of the disease.

This is all the more important because when diagnosed early, the survival rate for lung cancer increases considerably to more than 50%. Problem is, more than half of French people say they are not well informed regarding the risk factors linked to lung cancer or regarding therapeutic advances.

Share knowledge

It is to respond to the lack of information and promote early diagnosis that MSD France is launching the “CAP Lungs” initiative. Developed with a scientific council and the “My Lung Cancer Network/Patients in Networks” association, it will take the form of information days in around ten health establishments.

“Faced with the need for information on lung cancer, “CAP Lungs” offers a unique opportunity to share regarding this pathology and to deconstruct the preconceived ideas that are often associated with it,” explains Laure Guéroult-Accolas, founder of the Patients Network Association. “Its main objective is to provide essential knowledge and facilitate exchanges with health professionals. The approach, both fun and educational, aims not only to make learning more engaging, but also to free up speech on a subject often perceived as heavy.”

In practice

The “CAP Lungs” initiative will begin on November 15 at Bordeaux University Hospital. She will continue her journey by going on 1is December at the University Hospitals of Strasbourg, February 2, 2024 at the CHU Grenoble Alpes. Several other dates will follow during the year 2024. During one day, workshops on the prevention of risk factors will be offered, but also games to better understand the functioning of our lungs and to better understand the latest innovations therapeutic (virtual reality, quizzes, memory, etc.). It will also be possible to discuss with an onco-psychologist to address the psychological dimension of the illness.

Lung cancer in figures

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in France, and more than 52,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
