Luna, which was a leading brand in the country in the 1970s, is regarding to make a comeback in electric form. Retains part of its retro design and returns in a modern electric version. Kinetic Engineering Limited (KEL) has announced that it has started manufacturing the chassis and other components of the upcoming Kinetic E-Luna. The electric iteration of the brand’s iconic Luna moped will be launched under the Kinetic Green brand.
When the Luna was launched almost 50 years ago, it was priced at Rs 2,000. It became one of the most efficient, affordable and comfortable vehicles for India at that time. According to Kinetic Engineering, all major sub-assemblies were developed for the e-Luna, including the main chassis, main stand, side stand and swing arm in-house. The company has also set up a dedicated production line with plans to roll out 5,000 sets per month. KEL says it has invested over Rs 3 crore to upgrade the paint, press and fabrication shops at the Ahmednagar plant to support manufacturing and assembly of the model.
‘It’s fantastic to see the legendary Luna back in its e-avatar. We are very proud to be a part of this heritage, manufacturing all major subassemblies identically. During its heyday it sold over 2000 units per day. I am sure Luna will do very well in the new avatar. We expect this business to grow to an additional Rs 30 crore per annum in the next 2-3 years as the volume of e-Luna increases’ – said Ajinkya Firodia, MD, Kinetic Engineering Ltd.
