Lulamba Emerges as JCB Triumph Hurdle Favorite After Stunning Ascot Performance
Lulamba, the rising star of the racing world, has solidified his position as the 6/4 favorite for the prestigious JCB Triumph Hurdle following a breathtaking debut in the BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle at Ascot. Trained by Nicky Henderson and ridden by Nico De Boinville, this exceptional horse captivated audiences with a commanding performance, winning by three-and-a-half lengths.
Previously victorious at Auteuil, Lulamba was acquired by Joe and Marie Donnelly, who entrusted him to Henderson’s care.Even before the race began, the young thoroughbred was already considered a frontrunner for the Triumph Hurdle. His seamless transition from Flat racing to hurdles has been nothing short of remarkable.
“He is a very sound horse with an enormous future,” said Henderson. “Look at the size of him. He has had one run in France, and if he had been beaten in that race, you would nearly put him away until next season.he is just a beautiful horse.”
Lulamba’s performance left spectators and punters alike in awe.Despite facing stiff competition, including the talented Mondo Man, he maintained a steady pace, demonstrating both speed and precision. Betfair, Paddy Power, and sky Bet have all pegged him as the 6/4 favorite for the Cheltenham feature, with Sky Bet offering 11/8 in their non-runner/no bet market.
“I thought he was facing a complete brick wall there with the weight we were trying to give away against some very high-class horses,” henderson admitted. “Having said that, Nico said he was very classy and very good. He jumps and travels, and has pace. He is just a very straightforward horse.”
Mondo Man’s Promising Start
While Lulamba stole the spotlight, Mondo Man also turned heads with a strong debut in hurdling. Trained by Gary and Josh Moore, the Flat racing recruit showcased his potential, albeit with a few lessons to learn. “He jumped very well and was professional, but he was just a bit too gassy the first time they came around,” said josh Moore. “He has obviously got speed, but this is a different discipline and hopefully he will learn that gradually.”
Moore’s team remains optimistic about Mondo Man’s future, emphasizing his adaptability and resilience. “We are not disappointed at all as we certainly no we have run against a good horse,” added Moore.
Looking Ahead
With two successful runs under his belt, Lulamba’s next steps are a topic of much speculation. Henderson hinted at the possibility of a racecourse gallop at Kempton Park to keep the horse sharp. “It didn’t look like he needed another run to me as he looked like he knew exactly what he was doing,” he said.
As the racing world eagerly anticipates the JCB Triumph Hurdle, Lulamba’s journey promises to be one of excitement and high expectations. With his combination of talent, poise, and determination, this young horse is poised to leave an indelible mark on the sport.

To win the BetMGM Juvenile Hurdle by three-and-a-half lengths in his debut under Nicky Henderson’s training speaks volumes about his potential. His seamless transition from Flat racing to hurdles is a testament to his versatility and natural talent.
AE: Lulamba was already considered a frontrunner for the Triumph Hurdle even before the Ascot race. What is it about this horse that sets him apart from other contenders?
SC: It’s a combination of factors. First, his pedigree and previous success at Auteuil in France show he’s a proven winner.Second, his physical attributes—Nicky Henderson himself noted his impressive size and build, which are key for a hurdler. Lastly, his adaptability. Moving from Flat racing to hurdles and excelling immediately is rare. It’s clear he has both the speed and the jumping ability needed for top-level hurdling.
AE: How significant is it that Lulamba is now trained by Nicky Henderson, one of the most triumphant trainers in the sport?
SC: It’s a huge advantage. Henderson has an unparalleled track record with hurdlers, and his ability to nurture young talent is second to none. Lulamba couldn’t be in better hands.Henderson’s expertise will be crucial as the horse prepares for the Triumph Hurdle, especially given the heightened expectations now.
AE: With the Triumph Hurdle just around the corner, what challenges do you foresee for Lulamba?
SC: The main challenge will be handling the pressure of being the favorite. The Triumph Hurdle is a highly competitive race, and while Lulamba has shown immense promise, he’ll be up against other talented contenders.
