Lula goes to Celac with the aim of containing Maduro

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will attend the Celac summit with the purpose of containing the radicalism of Nicolás Maduro.

And according to official sources told the EFE agency, the Brazilian president will present on the table two points to be discussed about Venezuela at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), which will be held in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

In the case of Venezuela, Lula tries to present himself almost in the role of “peacemaker” on two different fronts, who could deal directly with Maduro within the framework of the Celac summit, if he finally attends.

Since tensions increased, Lula has shown himself to be a peacemaker in the dialogue between Venezuela and Guyana regarding the Essequibo, a region rich in minerals that both countries have disputed for more than a century.

He was emphatic about this matter this Wednesday in Guyana, where he attended the summit of the Caribbean Community (Caricom).

«Caricom opened to the south, rejecting the condition of a zone of influence of the powers. We have the challenge of maintaining our autonomy in the midst of geopolitical rivalries. It is up to us to maintain the region as a zone of peace,” said Lula at the Caribbean meeting.

On another level, Brazilian diplomacy acts in the shadows to try to collaborate with the holding of “democratic, free and transparent” elections in Venezuela. Although some of Lula’s positions that are somewhat complacent with Maduro have brought him harsh criticism from the most conservative regional sectors.

Brazil was one of the sponsors of the Barbados agreements, reached by the regime and the opposition and which established an electoral roadmap, but which seem to be on the verge of shipwreck, with what human rights organizations have denounced as a “new repressive wave” by Maduro.
