The President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, arrived in Portugal yesterday for a five-day official visit. However, his stay is marked by controversy, due to his latest pronouncements on the war between Russia and Ukraine.
In regarding a week and a half, Lula da Silva completes a diplomatic marathon that crosses continents.
This Friday he arrived in Portugal, accompanied by eight ministers, for an official visit until the 25th of April.
The Brazilian president was received by his counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
After complying with various protocol moments, the presidents went to the Belém Palace, where Lula da Silva laid a wreath on the tomb of Luís Vaz de Camões.
Still at the Belém Palace, Marcelo and Lula met in private and then addressed the press.
Lula da Silva reiterated his criticism of the European Union, stressing that if you don’t make peace, you contribute to war. In turn, Marcelo censured Russia.
The visit of the president of Brazil is marked by controversies, one of which stems from his latest pronouncements regarding the war in Ukraine, first made in China and then in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, where he accused the United States of America and the European Union to prolong the conflict, also implying that Ukraine would not have been a passive actor at the start of the war.
Lula da Silva’s statements caused dissatisfaction among Ukrainian citizens residing in Portugal and, this Saturday, they demonstrated in front of the Brazilian embassy, in Lisbon, and delivered a letter of protest for Lula da Sila’s pronouncements.
In Portugal, Lula will close bilateral agreements at the Portuguese-Brazilian summit and will travel to Spain.
