Lula da Silva leads Bolsonaro in preliminary vote count in Brazil’s presidential election

The results of the Brazilian presidential elections showed the lead of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva over the outgoing far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, following counting 91.6% of the votes.

1:42: Lula makes little progress with 91.6% of the votes counted

Former Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva of the left-wing Workers’ Party made a slight advance in the country’s presidential election, with 47.3% support, with 91.6% of the vote counted.

Incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro comes in second with 44.2% support.

Neither of the first two candidates is likely to get more than 50% of the valid vote, which excludes damaged and blank ballot papers, meaning that the second round of voting will be scheduled for October 30.

Leftist leader Luis Inacio Lula da Silva scored a lead over outgoing Brazilian far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, following 70 percent of polling stations were counted in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday.

Lula received 45.74 percent of the vote, compared to 45.51 percent for Bolsonaro, according to the official website of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal in charge of counting the votes.

Screening was more advanced in the Bolsonaro stronghold in the north and southeast regions, than in the Lula stronghold in the northeast.

Leading pollster Datafolha gave the former president 50 percent of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 36 percent in a poll published on the eve of the election, putting a first-round victory within reach of the veteran leftist candidate.

The gap between the presidential candidates narrowed with the completion of the vote counting. After Bolsonaro advanced by more than 5 points over Lula da Silva, the latter was able to return and reduce the difference between him and the right-wing president. With 60.3% of the ballot boxes counted, Bolsonaro received 46% of the vote, compared to 45.2% for his main rival Lula da Silva.

The outgoing far-right President Jair Bolsonaro in the preliminary vote count in Sunday’s presidential election overcame his rival, former leftist President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva.

With 30.8% of the votes counted, Bolsonaro got 47.6% of the vote, compared to 43.6% for his rival Lula da Silva.
