Lula and Boluarte talk about the “impasse” in Venezuela and “the importance of democracy”

Brasilia, Aug 28 (EFE).- Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke on Wednesday by telephone with his Peruvian counterpart, Dina Boluarte, about “the importance of democracy” and the search for a solution to the “electoral impasse” in Venezuela.

The two leaders spoke for about 35 minutes and reaffirmed their support for the “political, economic and logistical integration” of South America, the Brazilian presidency said in a statement.

Boluarte thanked Lula for Brazil’s support in representing his country’s interests in Venezuela following the breakdown of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Venezuela broke relations with Peru after the latter, like other countries in the region, denounced electoral fraud in the Venezuelan elections on July 28 and recognized opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as the winner.

Brazil, along with Colombia, has maintained open channels with the government of Nicolás Maduro and the opposition, and has repeatedly requested the publication of the electoral records “broken down by voting table.”

In this context, Boluarte thanked Brazil for its position of “seeking a solution to the electoral impasse in Venezuela.”

During the conversation, which was attended by Lula’s special advisor for international affairs, former foreign minister Celso Amorim, the Brazilian president expressed his interest in participating in the next summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will be held in November.

The progressive leader also commented on the need to have a General Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), which includes Brazil, Peru and the rest of the Amazonian countries, “fully operational” to strengthen the organization.

Lula also invited Peru to join the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, launched by Brazil within the G20 and open to all countries in the world.

This initiative aims to coordinate actions, exchange experiences and gather resources to reverse the growing social inequalities in the most vulnerable countries.
