Real Madrid has renewed the contract of veteran Croatian international Luka Modric for an additional year, until 2024, according to what the Spanish club announced on Monday.

Modric, at the age of 37, is still a key player in Real Madrid and decided to stay despite the great interest from the Saudi League, which wanted to obtain his services with the end of his current contract with Real, which expires this month.

Modric joined Germany’s Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos and Nacho Fernandez in the list of players who extended their contracts this summer.

“Real Madrid and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which will remain linked to the club until June 30, 2024,” a club statement read.

And he continued, “In 11 seasons in our shirt, he played 488 matches and won 23 titles,” including the European Champions League five times and the Spanish League on three occasions.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner joined the capital’s team from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

The player, who will be 38 years old next September, will face competition in the midfield next season, following bringing in young English international Hodd Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund for nearly 100 million euros ($109 million), in the presence of Kroos, Ceballos, and the French Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Chaumeni.

Modric ended his long season by becoming runners-up with Croatia in the European Nations League, losing to Spain, and he has not yet announced whether he will retire internationally, as was rumored, or compete in the 2024 European Cup finals next summer if his country qualifies.
