MADRID (AP) — The suspended president of the Spanish soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, announced Sunday that he has resigned from the position following the scandal over a kiss that tarnished the consecration of the women’s team in the World Cup.
Rubiales announced his resignation through a message on X, the social network previously known as Twitter.
The manager kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips without the player’s consent at the award ceremony following the Spanish 1-0 victory once morest England in the final that was played on August 20 in Sydney.
Spanish prosecutors opened a case once morest Rubiales, who might face criminal charges following Hermoso formally denounced him for sexual assault.
Rubiales had already been suspended from his duties by FIFA due to his behavior in the final.
“After the swift suspension carried out by FIFA, plus the rest of the procedures opened once morest me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position,” Rubiales wrote. “Insisting on waiting and clinging to it is not going to contribute anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football. Among other things, because there are de facto powers that will prevent my return.
Rubiales will also resign as UEFA vice president.
