Luis de la Fuente and his Spanish national team made history when they secured the country’s fourth European Championship gold on Sunday – the most of all.
– I mightn’t be happier. It has been an amazing day with an incredible team. I am very proud, he said following the victory.

But now the national team captain may be on his way out.
Desire for a US job
It is The Washington Post which states that the Spanish national team captain is eager for the assignment as the United States national team captain. The post is vacant following Gregg Berhalter was fired following a Copa America fiasco.
The news comes following de La Fuente earlier this year extended his contract with Spain until 2026.
According to the newspaper, representatives of de la Fuente have contacted the American Football Association’s sporting director Matt Crocker and conveyed the 63-year-old’s interest.
Klopp has nobbed
Matt Crocker is managing the process of finding a new national team captain for the USA and the work is expected to be completed in September. Previously, it has been reported that they agreed with the unemployed Jürgen Klopp, who is said to have rejected the offer.
A representative for the American League said Sunday that it would not comment on potential candidates, but the paper said there is strong interest in the position. Not least considering that the USA has a direct spot for the World Cup on home soil in 2026.
