Luis Almagro calls repression in Venezuela after presidential elections “base”

This Thursday, August 8th, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagroassured in Miami that the vote of the Venezuelan people must be respected, which in the presidential elections which took place on July 28 voted in favor of a “transition to democracy and peace”.

In a press conference held at the headquarters of the Mayor’s Office of this city in southern Florida (United States), Almagro reiterated that in these elections the people voted for the full exercise of the rights they have to “peace, democracy and justice«.

«Peace for the defense and struggle for human rights, peace for better social conditions, social, civil, political, economic, and cultural rights for all people“the OAS secretary stressed, as reported by Efe.

It should be remembered that just one day after these elections and without counting the final tally of the electoral records, the National Electoral Council (CNE), expressly proclaimed Nicolás Maduro for a third term, with 51% of the votes, without any evidence, unlike the Unitary Platform, which has published evidence and shows its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, as the winner.

The Venezuelan electoral process has been criticized by the international community, as well as by the head of the OAS, and several countries have recognized González Urrutia as president-elect.

Almagro regretted today that Venezuela is “going through more than difficult times«, in the middle of «repression, prison, murders, extrajudicial executions“, which reflects that the Government headed by Maduro has made a”indiscriminate use of violence against its people«.

«You have to be very low, you have to be absolutely vile and repulsive to do that.“, denounced the head of the OAS.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and City Commissioner Joe Carollo presented Almagro with the keys to the city and a proclamation of recognition for his work in defense of democracy and human rights.

Speaking to the media, Suarez asked not to let Maduro “carry out this fraud» electoral, and advocated for a coordinated response at the international level in favor of «the truth» of the results.

«That will not only free Venezuela but will give a breath of hope to Cuba, Nicaragua and the people who want and deserve to be free.“, he stressed.

Almagro has criticized the fact that Venezuelan electoral authorities have declared Maduro the winner without having presented the minutes certifying this victory, a delay that is possibly, he said, “the longest in the history of the region«.

Last week, the Permanent Council of the OAS was unable to pass a resolution demanding the publication of the minutes of the CNE, due to the abstention or absence of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The resolution was promoted by the United States and by Latin American countries whose ambassadors were expelled from Venezuela after the elections, such as Argentina, Peru and Chile.
