The group Lufthansa et Lily have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic partnership in the operation of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and Europe.
Companies are keen to explore opportunities for innovation in aviation, discussing areas such as ground and flight operations, future aircraft maintenance, as well as crew training and pilots. As part of a possible strategic partnership, the two companies also intend to analyze collaboration opportunities with third parties, such as airports and regional partners, for example, in infrastructure development, such as vertiportsintegration into the airspace and the definition of the necessary operational processes.
“Innovation is part of our DNA”underlined Detlef Kayser, member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board in charge of fleet and technology. “The Lufthansa Group aspires to become a global leader in the integration of next-generation products and processes. We want to further develop aviation and drive the transformation of the industry. This memorandum of understanding with Lilium will make an important contribution to this. Only with innovation, courage and determination can we, as an industry, make aviation more sustainable and meet the challenges of the future. »
“We are delighted that the Lufthansa Group has decided to cooperate with us to advance the future of flight together”says Klaus Roewe, CEO of Lilium. “The Lufthansa Group has been at the forefront of some of Europe’s most important aviation initiatives, particularly in the area of environmental sustainability. We are excited to explore opportunities to offer eVTOL flights to Lufthansa Group customers. »
As announced on December 6 by Lilium’s press release, the company has started production of its Lilium Jet. According to Lilium’s internal projections, the European market is expected to represent demand of approximately 9,200 eVTOL aircraft by 2035.
With a current fleet of more than 700 commercial aircraft, the Lufthansa Group is pursuing a long-term fleet strategy aimed at profitability and reducing emissions. The Lufthansa Group’s latest aircraft acquisitions have up to 30% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than previous models. The Lufthansa Group aims to halve its net carbon emissions by 2030, aiming to become carbon neutral by 2050.
